MTT (multi-table tournaments)
Players start multi-table tournaments with an equal fixed amount of chips and play until 1 player has all the chips. Blindes and antes increase as the game progresses and as players are eliminated from the tournament the tables are consolidated to keep the amount of players equal.
SATELLITES
Satellite poker tournaments lead players up to a bigger jackpot tournament for a fraction of the buy in. A satellite can have several stages before you reach the monster jackpot tournament.
RE-BUY TOURNAMENTS
Similar to MTT's but a player has the option to rebuy before the first break if they lose all their chips and usually players are given an option to buy an ADD-ON during the first break.
(Rebuys and add-ons usually cost the same as the tournament buy in). |
SIT AND GO TOURNAMENTS
Mini tournaments that dont have a designated start time, the tournament begins when all seats are filled.
Game selection
The difference between starting off as a winner or loser is game selection. Choose the appropriate game for your bankroll and skill level.
Bankroll
Make sure you have an adequate bankroll for the stake of the game.
Evaluate the game
Watching the game for a few hands before joining in has enormous benefits eg; you can start to see how the other players are playing their game and what size of bets they are putting in the pot, as well as seeing their cards at the showdown to get to know what types of cards they had and how they played the hand.
PLAY-MONEY GAMES
A good way to learn or improve on your poker play as well as learning the rules and betting procedures.
"Texas Holdem" BETTING ROUNDS;
Poker has 4 different rounds of betting;
PRE-FLOP
After 2 cards faced down to every player are dealt, the player left of the big blind decides to call raise or fold. Each player in turn is then given the same options, until all bets are called.
THE FLOP
The dealer turns over the 1st 3 of the community cards. All betting rounds start with the player immediately to the dealer button.
THE TURN
The 4th community card is dealt and a new round of betting begins.
THE RIVER
The last community card is dealt and the final round of betting begins.
SHOWDOWN
After all bets are called aftet the final round of betting there is a SHOWDOWN and the best hand takes the pot, in the event of a tie the pot would be split between the winning hands.
ANTES AND BLINDS
Antes and blinds are both forced bets required by players before any cards are dealt. An ante is contributed by each player before any cards are dealt. A blind is only required off certain players, eg; in texas holdem there is a small blind and a big blind, the player immediately to the left of the dealer button puts down the small blind which is half the minimum stake and the player immediately left to the small blind posts the big blind which is the minimum stake. |
BETTING LIMITS
Poker has 3 different types of betting limits, these are;
Fixed limit
Both the bet and the raise amounts are predetermined.
Pot limit
The maximum bet or raise a player can make cannot be more than the current pot amount.
No limit
The name says it all, in no limit there are no maximum bet limits, a player can put all of their chips in the pot in one move.
ACTIONS
CHECK
If a player checks they are declining to make the 1st bet and is then passing on that option to the next player in the betting sequence until someone makes a bet or all players have checked.
BET
A bet occurs when a player puts an amount of money in the pot. All of the players are then given the following 3 options;
FOLD
If a player folds, they are electing to withdraw from the game and they then forfeits all the money they have put in the pot up until that stage of the game and cannot win the pot.
CALL
If a player calls they must match the bet placed in tne pot made by the player proceeding them in the betting sequence.
RAISE
| A player can raise by matching and exceeding the current bet. All players must then call, raise or fold this bet. |

POKER TOURNAMENTS
Playing in a poker tournament offers the chance to win big jackpots for a small entry fee and with some smart play and a bit of luck you could make it onto the final table, because of this poker tournaments have become increasingly popular online and are available 24 hours a day and are available in a wide range of styles as listed below;
TIGHT/LOOSE AND PASSIVE/AGGRESSIVE
These are the main ways to describe poker games and poker players;
Tight/loose
Describes how many hands a player will play, if they play a lot of hands they are considered loose, if they play very few hands they are considered tight. Players are often quite loose at the beginning of a tournament, Its best to sit out of the hands and analyze other players for the first couple of rounds. Especially in freeroll tournaments where players go ALL IN a lot at the start of the tournament.
Passive/aggressive
Describes how often a player bets on their hands. Passive players do not bet very often and prefer to call or check.
Aggressive players bet heavily on their hands and dont call or check very often. |
Random Number Generators (RNG)
Since 1996 when online gaming came to the internet it has improved tremendously, websites are getting faster with more powerful programs and the encryption technology enables fast and secure transactions with customers able to keep track of transactions and monitor their funds as well as their bets. All of the gaming sites featured on OnlinePokerFreerolls.co.uk have great security, playability, customer service and RNG algorhythm's (random number generaters) which are monitored by independent companys & have the latest security features to keep every game fair and you and your money safe on-line. The RNG is a part of the software that assures that the 'events' taking place are truly random. Online gaming sites offer better odds and bonuses than landbased companys because of there being less overhead costs. |

Poker - Luck or skill?
Why do you think the same 5 guys make it to the WSOP (world series of poker) every year? Are they the luckiest guys in the world? No doubt about it poker is a skill game, a combination of reading your opponents moves and making the right move at the right time and of cause luck does come into the equation but knowing when your opponents are going to bet and fold, vastly improves your chance of winning. As you start playing poker online you will find if you follow the game close you will start to pick up how much time a player takes to make a decision as well as patterns of the cards and players. The more you play the better you'll get at reading what your opponents actions will be. |
Watch out for badbeats!
In poker a badbeat can mean; having say A-K pocket cards but getting beat by a worse hand say 7-2. |
Why do I sometimes see very strange events or strings of bad luck at the table?
There are numerous reasons why the deal will sometimes not appear to be random and badbeats seem to be flying round the table left right and centre; 1. Firstly, playing online you will be dealt far more hands than in a casino – (approximately 55 – 75 hands per hour online vs. 25 in a casino), 2. Players online tend to play far more hands, which means that often there are more players seeing the flop and players stay in hands, online longer, this all results in many more bad beats for the favoured hand – because there are more players drawing against the best hand. 3. A concrete example of the above is ... In Holdem, AA against a random hand might be a 65 % favourite, against 2 hands, a 60 % favorite against 3 hands about 50 % and so on. The more hands drawing against you and the longer they stay in the hand, the more likely the best hand will lose. 4. A few hundred hands or even a couple of thousand, do NOT represent a meaningful sampling of hands, at least 30–40 thousand hands are required to begin to form a meaningful sample. 5. Also, we tend to NOTICE strange events far more than normal events, for instance, when we lose two tough hands in a short period with KK or AA, we feel that this is very improbable. However, we tend not to notice when our 67 beats KK and our 44 beats AA – In other words we attribute greater significance to events that are against us and tend not to notice when we are the beneficiaries of the same luck in our favour. |

Poker freeroll tournaments
Poker freerolls are usually played using Texas Holdem Rules, although most sites offer a few other games as well, omaha,7 card stud etc. The amount of entries can vary a lot, some sites like MicroGamings PokerStars that now has up to 12,000 entrants. Poker freeroll tournaments don't just pay the winner, the prize money is divided into a percentage, the higher you get placed the more money you will win, with a few thousand players in one freeroll tournament, you can finish in 150th place and still win a small percentage of the prize money, the more players there are the more places get paid eg; 5000 players in a $1000 freeroll tournament would usually pay around 260 places, with 1st prize receiving around $135 all the way to 260th place that gets $1.50. Some poker sites offer more freerolls than others, and some have qualifier satelite freerolls that lead you into big tournaments. Freeroll tournament prize money can vary from $10 - $1000 with some poker sites having monster freerolls occasionally. Monster freerolls are freeroll tournaments that have a large payout above $1000.
